Dover, Massachusetts is a city which is part of Norfolk County and was first settled in 1635 and later incorporated in 1836. Dover is approximately located 15 miles Southwest of Boston and is located on the South banks of the Charles River. The total population of Dover is just under 6,200 local residents and has a total land area of approximately 15 square miles.
Dover holds some of the best public schools in Massachusetts. The three public schools, Chickering Elementary School, Dover-Sherborn Middle School and Dover-Sherborn High School all sat at number one for the best public schools, voted by Boston magazine consecutively from 2013 – 2019.
The town is also well known for its sighting of the ‘Dover Demon’ – a large-eyed creature “with tendril-like fingers” and glowing eyes, which was first spotted in April, 1977. This ‘creature’ was featured in the TV series ‘Lost Tapes’ which aired on Animal Planet. It was also a part of the comic book series ‘Proof’.
Operated by the Dover Historical Society, the Sawin Museum contains thousands of books, photographs and other items of interest relating to the Dover area. The museum is open to the public free of charge.
